Mini Indy 2006 Raises Record Amount for Local Charity

Amongst smiles from the crowd, SkyWest Airlines' director of parts and Mini Indy Chairman Todd Wilkinson presented an $83,500 check to the United Way Dixie Thursday at the 2006 United Way Dixie Awards Luncheon at the St. George Opera House. Describing the unusual circumstances of this year’s race weekend, Wilkinson said, “I’ve been in St. George since ’87, and I’ve never seen it snow for three days in March. The one thing we can always sell people on is the weather, and I’m sure we can improve that next year.” This year’s race, March 10 -12, 2006, was met with unusual spring conditions as racers from as far as Europe, Canada and South America competed for the checkered flag in a flurry of snow and sleet.

“It certainly made for an interesting ‘wet’ corner,” event director and SkyWest manager of travel and people programs Brandi Honey explained to a member of the crowd. But despite the weather complications, the event was an overwhelming success with racers and the community as a whole.

Tami Sevier, Chief Professional Officer of United Way Dixie, said Mini Indy 2006 was a “win-win event for the entire community. We appreciate all the volunteer hours that go into this event each year. The money raised has made a huge difference.”

Monies generated go directly to the United Way Dixie, which in-turn supports Washington County agencies such as Big brothers Big Sisters of Southern Utah, Doctors’ Free Clinic and Dixie Care and Share.
