Rules

• Team Member Rules 2012

  • 1. Drivers are required to complete a training course prior to competing in the St. George / SkyWest Airlines Mini Indy. Drivers and participants must be at least 18 years of age.
    2. Teams must have a minimum of two (2) drivers and a minimum of five (5) team members.
    3. Course perimeters, Pit Area and Inspection Areas will be restricted to approved team members and at the discretion of race officials only.
    4. All team participants must sign event insurance waivers and be appropriately registered prior to participating in any scheduled events.
    5. Any and all decisions are made with safety as the prime consideration. Race Officials and their decisions are to be considered final.
    6. Team members are expected to act responsibly at all times and will be held accountable for their own actions.
    7. Alcohol and/or chemical substances or the consumption of these items are strictly prohibited during or prior to any event.
    8. Any loose clothing, long hair or loose articles must be controlled and managed by the individual to prevent being caught in vehicle moving parts.
    9. All participants are required to wear the following minimum safety equipment while participating in event driving or during the race:

    • Long sleeve shirt, jacket or uniform- No short sleeves 
    • Coveralls-Full length race uniform- Full length pants 
    • Full cover shoes – No open toe or sandal style shoe 
    • When driving, gloves and helmet are required in addision to the above listed equipment.

    10. Spectators are restricted to areas designated as spectator areas. At no time are spectators allowed access to restricted RACE PARTICIPANT areas.

• Vehicle Rules

  • 1. Participating cars must be approved by race officials and race inspectors prior to activation in the event.

    2. All cars must be of the same manufacturer (PROMO KARTS) and be of equal speed capability and horsepower.

    3. ABSOLUTLEY NO PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENTS OR IMPROVEMENTS TO THE ORIGINAL MANUFACTURER SPECIFICATIONS FOR ENGINES IS PERMITTED. PERMISSIBLE MODIFICATIONS ARE REGULATED AND ARE IN THE INTEREST OF SAFETY. UPON DISCOVERY OF ANY ENGINE OR PERFORMANCE ENHANCING MODIFICATIONS, IMMEDIATE DISQUALIFICATION FROM THE EVENT WILL OCCUR.

    4. ALLOWABLE MODIFICATIONS:

    •  Lubricating and cleaning of chain drive.
    • Chain alignment between drive gears. 
    • Stock chain may be replaced with heavy duty chain (CHAIN GEAR RATIO MAY NOT BE MODIFIED). 
    • Steering wheel modification or change to allow for easier cockpit access. 
    • Steering wheel can be made removable, but must lock into place while in use. 
    • Change Spark Plug. 
    • Change oil using typical recommended oil (NO SYNTHETIC OIL ALLOWED) 
    • Tire camber or toe in/out wheel alignment. 
    • Seat/seat belt retention fasteners may be upgraded. 
    • Any bearing not located on or in the engine may be replaced with high quality or heavy duty bearings (ie. front wheel bearings, steering   column bearings, front end bearings). 
          
    • PLEASE NOTE - Spindles may not be modified. Body may NOT be cut or modified to allow access of drivers (REMOVAL OF MATERIAL TO LIGHTEN VEHICLE IS PROHIBITED). No modifications to brake and throttle pedal original mounting points and stops allowed

    5. Factory replacement parts are the only parts allowed to replace any part not shown above.

    6. Teams are encouraged to purchase spare parts from Mo Vaquera at SkyWest and bring them to the race. Past experience has shown the following items to be high usage by race teams: FRONT WHEEL NUTS * FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS * FRONT WHEEL ASSEMBLY (with tire). Race officials will have limited spare parts available for purchase on site. We will do everything possible to ensure you do not fallout of the race due to lack of parts, but all situations cannot be anticipated.

    7.  Car Engine governor setting must not be adjusted after inspection by race technicians. Technicians will set racecar engines at a predetermined RPM setting. Typically, this setting will be between 3800 and 4000 RPM. All cars will be set the same. Any change in setting by team members will result in immediate disqualification. During technical inspection, ONE team member may be present and will be escorted by race officials at all times during the inspection process. Any questions or challenges about race technician ruling will be directed to the Chief Technical Inspector. AT NO TIME WILL TEAM MEMBERS ARGUE OR CHALLENGE TECHNICAL TEAM MEMBERS. The Chief Technical Inspector has complete authority for disqualification or penalty rulings. Please remember these are volunteers and the event is for charity, not for pole position at the Indy 500!

• Race Rules

  • 1. Race Drivers shall be aware that unsportsmanlike conduct and un-safe driving practices can result in a 10-second stop-and-go penalty that is administered by active race course officials.
    
    2. Pit lane officials are there to ensure pit stop rules are complied with and team members observe safe practices. Pit lane rule violations will be noted by pit officials and appropriate stop-and-go penalties administered by race officials.
    
    3. Any cars involved in apparent serious incidents/accidents are required to have drivers report to onsite paramedic services and to have their car inspected by technical team members before re-entering the race.
    
    4. Any driver attempting to pass other active race cars is responsible for safe practices and conduct. Any car deemed to be blocking another car or driving in a reckless manner may be "black flagged." Black flagged means that the driver must STOP at the direction of the race official giving the black flag and must remain in that location until otherwise instructed.
    
    5. All drivers must obey any signals or directions given by race officials. Failure to do so will result in a "Black Flag."
        Black Flag    Specific driver must stop at the direction of the race official
        Red Flag    Danger on course, slow down, do not pass, race will be stopped at start line and restarted         
        Yellow Flag    Danger on course, slow down, do not pass
        White Flag    Last lap, next lap, checkered flap
        Checkered Flag   End of race at start line, after start line slow down, do not pass
        Green Flag    Begin race, do not pass until crossing the start line                                                               
    
    6. The pit stop will consist of driver signaling to enter pit lane. Car entering pit lane is responsible to avoid other cars and personnel. Car must stop within the designated pit box (pit cannot continue until car is within designated pit box). Driver must be changed out and buckled in, front right wheel must be removed, tapped on ground, reinstalled and secured with spindle nut.  Pit crew can push assist car only within pit box.
    
    7.  The tool used to jack the car for removing the wheel must be hand operated mechanical and not assisted by compressed air or battery (electric) powered.  The tool used to remove the wheel axle nut must be hand operated mechanical and not assisted by compressed air, hydraulics, springs or battery/electric powered. Examples of approved tools are; Crank style speed wrench, ratchet and socket, crescent wrench, mini wheel spanners (similar to 60s cross lug nut wrench).

• Competition Rules

  • The teams will be divided into two (2) divisions of up to 25 cars each. Each race car team will participate in four (4) race heats. Each heat will consist of 10 complete laps around the racecourse. The final race of the day will consist of the top 10 teams from both divisions for the chance to be crowned race champion. The determination of the top 10 teams is the result of average place of finish during the best three of four heats your team participates in.

    Trophies for the race will include: 

    • Overall Race Champion
    • Second Place  
    • Third Place
    • Division Champions (1st & 2nd)  
    • Second Place  
    • Third Place
• Other Competitions

  • QUICKEST PIT STOP TEAM
    Each team will participate in a Quickest Pit Stop competition that will be conducted with the following rules:

    • Team cars will be placed at a set point with one team member in the car (both hands on steering wheel until tapped by team member)
    • Four (4) team members will be set at a predetermined distance behind car.
    • When the competition officials start the event, the team members will footrace up to the car to complete a tire change by removing a tire, bounce the removed tire on the ground, replace the tire and secure the retaining nut.
    • During the tire change, each team must also switch the driver with another member of the team to which both hands must be on steering wheel. This is a timed event and timing will stop when the last team member returns across the starting line. 
    • Race Officials will verify completion of the pit stop – any items found not to be in compliance with competition rules will cause that team to be assessed a 10-second penalty.
    • Teams will compete side by side in heats. The fastest team from each heat will advance to the next round. This is a single elimination event. 

    Trophies will be awarded as follows:

    • Quickest Pit Stop Champion
    • Second Place 
    • Third Place

    BEST- LOOKING RACE TEAM
    Each team will participate in a Best-Looking Team competition that will be judged on the appearance of team uniforms.  Trophies will be awarded in the following order:

    • Best-Looking Team
    • Second Place
    • Third Place

    BEST-LOOKING RACE CAR
    Each team will participate in a Best-Looking Race Car competition that will be judged on the appearance of paint, decals, etc. Props, removable props and decorations may be used for the competition. Any props not in compliance with race requirements must be removed prior to the actual race. Trophies will be awarded in the following order:

    • Best-Looking Race Car
    • Second Place
    • Third Place
